YOUR BUSINESS

Please describe your business: The Coronado Times is a local online newspaper covering Coronado, CA.  Over 50,000 monthly readers enjoy daily coverage of news, events, people and lifestyle 24/7. Accessible whether you live on or off the “island”, we publish stories, events and news that matters to both locals and visitors.

How many years have you been in the news business?  The Coronado Times started out as eCoronado in 2002 (18 years ago - time has flown by!) as an online news source to stay connected to Coronado. In 2016, we changed our name to The Coronado Times as we have added more newspaper-related coverage and services. It’s amazing to us that we have been covering Coronado for almost 20 years!

What do you think makes The Coronado Times special?  We shine a light on our neighbors, local business and happenings around town.  Not only do we employ a dozen of Coronado locals, but we pride ourselves on being fair and timely in our coverage.

What is the best compliment you have been paid about The Coronado Times?  Almost daily we receive feedback about how our publication has helped get to the “real story” behind rumors or unfounded social media claims.  We also love the positive feedback we get regarding our weekly “Goodness” email newsletter which highlights the “good news” stories around Coronado.

Do you have any specials you would like to offer exclusively to Chamber Members? The Coronado Times is pleased to offer a free banner ad to brand new Chamber members and even Chamber members that are celebrating their membership anniversary.  (Members can email Steve at steve@coronadotimes.com) For real estate related companies, we are sold out on ad space but would be glad to provide an hour of online marketing strategy. We absolutely love working with local business owners to share their product and service with our 50,000 readers on and off the island.

YOUR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

What do you hope to achieve by joining the Coronado Chamber of Commerce? Since we are a digital newspaper, we joined the Chamber to meet other business owners in person.  It’s been a wonderful experience to attend mixers, events and even serve on the board of directors for two years.

Is there anything else you would like your fellow Chamber members to know about you or your business? Yes, we honestly care about our community. Being in the news business, we know that focusing on the bad will increase readership, but that is not the mission of The Coronado Times.  We truly want to represent our “island community” and all the news that happens here. Most of our news is positive and uplifting - we strive to continue this as we approach being in business for 20 years.  We know that bad news will happen and we will certainly cover it - however, our goal is to be fair, balanced and if we lean in any direction, it’s to be a positive representative of the caring and kind people that make up our community.  Coronado has always been about the people that live here and not just the beautiful landscapes that surround us.

YOUR CORONADO

Do you live in Coronado? Yes,my wife and I moved here in 1999 and have two children that attend Coronado High School.

How would you describe life on Coronado Island?  Work hard, play hard and keep a margin in our day to connect with our friends and neighbors.  Getting out in the ocean or bay makes any stressful day better!

What is the best thing about doing business in Coronado? The staff of The Coronado Times get to work from home which is a huge benefit to achieving a work/life balance.  We also enjoy promoting the business and services of our neighbors - it’s a joy to publish The Coronado Times and see our readers gobble it up each day.

Where do you take out of town visitors to impress or charm them? Lunch at Ferry Landing is a must, followed up by a bike ride around the “island” and ending with a drink at the Hotel del Coronado.  If the waves are pumping at the Shores, a longboard session is a must, whether they are new to surfing or an old pro.

YOUR LIFE

Would you like to introduce us to your family?  My wife Lisa Johnson brought us to Coronado when she worked as a Pastor for Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church - I had never been to Coronado before we moved here and was blown away by the beauty of the community and the people that live here.  Now, 20 years later, we have two kids in high school, a vibrant local business and we look forward to being empty nesters 3 years from now. :)

Do you have any pets you would like to describe? Roxy (the labradoodle) is a great companion and is always welcomed in the office - she never has a bad bark to say about our stories or coverage!

Do you have any special hobbies or interests?  When I’m not playing tennis or surfing with my son, I enjoy weeding.  It’s crazy, but when you work in digital all day, it’s nice to have a pile of weeds to see what you have accomplished.  I’m also an amateur numerologist - one of my discoveries was that Coronado zip code 92118, lined up with 9-21-18 a few years ago! You can read the piece here:  https://coronadotimes.com/92118day/  I hope you were there and I hope to see you at the next celebration in 98 years!

Thanks so much for chatting with us Steve - see you at our next Mixer!
