YOUR BUSINESS
Please tell us about the Coronado Schools Foundation: CSF is a broadly-based, nonprofit community organization whose purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. Its role is to promote and maintain quality education and welfare of all students within the boundaries of the Coronado Unified School District (CUSD). Through community involvement and support, CSF raises and manages funds to provide the STEM and Arts Pathway programs available to all students enrolled in CUSD. I am honored to be able to work closely with Superintendent Karl Mueller and the other district administrators to provide outstanding experiences and education enrichment for all of our students.
How many years have you been involved and what first drew you to this work? CSF was founded in 1982. I came to CSF in November 2019, after a ten-year career at UC San Diego. I chose to leave a very successful career at UC San Diego because I so firmly believe the mission of CSF, to provide quality enrichment educational opportunities for all students enrolled in our district. I am the proud parent of two Coronado school district alumni and know first-hand the value of the education they received in our schools and feel it is important to give back to our district.
What is the best compliment you have been paid about the work you do? I would say the best compliment is more of an action than a verbal acknowledgement: Beth and Jack Elardo, who are 6th and 7th graders at CMS, believe that the programs that CSF funds are so important to their education that they have personally raised and donated more than $11,000 to our organization. This extreme act of service and commitment by two of the students who are impacted by the programs CSF funds speaks volumes!
Is there anything people would be surprised to learn about CSF? We have an amazing team of accomplished individuals with impressive professional backgrounds fueling our fundraising efforts. They are all parents of children enrolled in our district and they choose to work for CSF because they so strongly believe in our mission.
YOUR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
What do you hope to achieve by joining the Coronado Chamber of Commerce? Having worked off the island for the past 15 years, I am looking forward to getting to know my fellow Coronado business owners and residents on a much better basis. It’s good to be home.
YOUR CORONADO
Do you live in Coronado? Yes, I have lived her for 22 years.
How would you describe life on Coronado Island? Safe, friendly, and very family oriented.
What is the best thing about doing business in Coronado? The tremendous support of our community members and strong sense of ownership they have for our schools.
Where do you take out of town visitors to charm them? I love to take them to the beach, or down to the pool at The Shores to relax in the sun.
YOUR LIFE
Would you like to introduce us to your family? I have two adult sons, Phil and Christian, who graduated from CHS in 2004 and 2007 respectfully. Phil is a lawyer in downtown San Diego, and Christian is a fulltime employee of Coronado Fire, working with the year-round lifeguard team under Captain Sean Carey. Phil’s wife Lauren is a Navy nurse at Balboa Hospital, and they have two adorable children – Griffin aged 2 ½ and Palmer 8 months.
Do you have any pets? I am a true animal lover, but because I live in The Shores, it’s hard to have pets. However, I do enjoy my older son’s Pug, named Mugsy!
Do you have any special hobbies or interests? Too many to mention – I love to cook, sew, do various crafts, read, walk on the beach, swim, and the list goes on. But my favorite pastime of ALL is spending time with my grandchildren.
Thank you JeanMarie! We are following your current activities on Instagram @csfkids
